What ceramic protection actually does, and how long it lasts

"Ceramic" is used to sell everything from a £6 spray to a £600 professional coating, which has made the word close to meaningless on a shelf. It is worth separating what the chemistry does from what the label says.
What it actually does
A ceramic layer changes the surface, not the paint. Three things follow from that:
- Water beads and leaves. A hydrophobic surface sheds water instead of holding it, which is why a protected car dries faster and spots less.
- Dirt has less to grip. A slicker surface means road film bonds less readily, so the car stays cleaner for longer and the next wash takes less effort.
- Gloss. A smoother surface reflects more evenly. This is the part people notice first and the part that matters least.
What it does not do is make paint scratch-proof, and no honest product claims otherwise.
The numbers, and why they differ

The pattern is straightforward: the more a product has to do besides protecting, the shorter the protection lasts. A shampoo is mostly a cleaner carrying some protection. A coating is only protection, applied to an already-clean surface, so almost all of it survives.
"Builds over time" is a real effect
Every one of the wash products above says protection builds with use, and that is worth taking literally. A single application of ceramic snow foam gives you a thin layer. Four washes give you a meaningfully better one — the beading, the sheeting and the dirt release all improve over the first month.
This is why the routine matters more than any individual bottle. A car washed with ceramic snow foam every fortnight is being protected twenty-six times a year, without a single dedicated protection session.
Do they fight each other?
No, and this is the useful part. These products are pH neutral and safe on coatings, waxes and sealants. Snow foam over a graphene coating does not strip it; it tops it up. Detailer over shampoo adds rather than replaces.
The one thing that will undo the lot is a caustic cleaner. Most cheap traffic-film removers are caustic, which is why a car can look freshly cleaned and bead like bare paint an hour later.
A sensible routine
Coat it once or twice a year. Wash it with something that protects. Top it up with a detailer when you want it looking sharp for a weekend. That is three products doing three different jobs, and none of them undoing another one's work.
